Transfer News: Manchester United offer huge contract to Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele

According to Spanish outlet ABC [Print Edition] via The Faithful MUFC (h/t Football.London), Manchester United have put a large contract offer on the table to Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele this January transfer window. He has been engaged in a contract standoff at Camp Nou, which has seemingly resulted in a departure being on the cards this month.

Dembele has entered the final six months of his current deal at Camp Nou, so he could be available on a cut-price fee in the winter transfer window. He could legally sign a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside Spain this month ahead of a move next summer. Chelsea are also keeping tabs on the situation to get his signature as they look to boost their forward line.

Supposedly, Man United have offered the 24-year-old an outrageous £480,000-a-week as they are in the market for an attacker. Barca’s director of football, Mateu Alemany, has recently revealed that they would sell him before the window closes down, contrary to the claims stating an extension has been agreed between both parties.

No, thank you!

If this piece of information has any truth to it, this would be a highly questionable decision on our board’s part. He has failed to reach his potential to warrant such massive wages and his injury struggles at Barca are no secret.

For that very reason, we should take this news with a pinch of salt. Moreover, midfield should be our obvious priority and the areas where we need to spend big to solve the instability within the squad.

Spending nearly half a million weekly on wages for a player who has had a topsy-turvy time in Spain would be a risky decision, to say the least. On top of that, there will always be that nightmare scenario where we could find ourselves bleeding that amount of money weekly if he encounters another long-term injury.

It is not like we are desperate for additions in the wide position for us to offer such a mouth-watering salary package. We have plenty of options in the wings, even with the recent temporary departure of Anthony Martial to Sevilla.

Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho and the emerging Anthony Elanga give us enough depth in the wide areas for now. As such, it would be surprising to see the Manchester club target the France international when we have more pressing issues at hand.

Paul Pogba could leave next summer, whereas Nemanja Matic cannot be depended on regularly due to his ageing body. Donny van de Beek just never seems to get a chance and we are over-reliant on Fred and Scott McTominay in that regard.

It is wiser to redirect our time and money towards strengthening a position that really does need attention right now. With barely any time left in the transfer window now, it remains to be seen if our board can sanction a deal to bring in a new face- be it in attack or midfield.
