Transfer News: Newcastle United register interest to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson
According to Manchester Evening News, Newcastle United have shown an interest in signing Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson this January transfer window. He has largely struggled to earn minutes at Old Trafford following the resurgence of David de Gea.
Henderson is willing to leave Man United permanently, having fallen down the pecking order for the national team as well. However, Ralf Rangnick had blocked his attempt to depart on loan earlier, but that has not altered his intentions to leave any sort of way. Newcastle have now expressed themselves as an option as they look to bolster their squad ahead of a relegation battle.
Ajax have also been in the mix since they have directly contacted the Englishman’s representatives to discuss a potential move. The Magpies have continued their interest in Jesse Lingard as well despite the recent breakdown in negotiations. However, they are restricted by the rule that prevents them from getting more than one player on loan from another Premier League club.
Deadline day exit?
It is really difficult to see the 24-year-old leaving elsewhere due to the stance taken by Rangnick. He could simply demand the Manchester club to block off all attempts from the Toons regardless of their degree of interest. That would be a wise decision as well since it is good to have a good backup option in between the posts.
De Gea will probably continue to play as the first choice keeper as he has been sensational after overthrowing the England international. But the latter can still be crucial for us since we have a long season still left to be played. We are still in the FA Cup, so he would probably take over the mantle during the domestic competition.
Having the Man United star as a second choice safeguards our interest in the case of an injury or suspension to the Spaniard. Moreover, we cannot overlook the impact Covid-19 can have on the squad since we have already experienced it first-hand last December, which led to some of our matches getting postponed.
It remains to be seen whether the Red Devils keeper would push for a move this late with the added interest from Eddie Howe’s side. The German boss could still block off attempts which won’t be a surprise. Time will tell how this situation would pan out in the coming hours as the deadline date is just on the horizon.

Henderson, at 24, is one of the top English goalkeepers and there is no reason why a player of his calibre should not go to the FIFA World Cup this summer with the Three Lions. If Rangnick keeps him here for this season, he must ensure that he gets a fair chance at playing time to impress Gareth Southgate.
