Manchester United fined €10,000 by UEFA for Champions League transgression
According to the Mirror, Manchester United have been handed a fine of €10,000 by UEFA after three fans invaded the pitch during their UEFA Champions League clash against Young Boys in December.
The Red Devils faced the Swiss side at home in their last game of the group stages. The game ended 1-1 and Man United qualified for the last 16 where they will face off against Spanish champions Atletico Madrid. With progress to the knockouts already assured, Ralf Rangnick rang in the changes to his lineup that night.
The standout moment occurred when three fans gave security the slip and ran don’t the field. The incident does not appear to have been appreciated by the European governing body who have now fined the club for the incident
The amount is but a shot in the leg for the club for an incident that could have been easily avoidable. Whether this will lead to strict security at Old Trafford in the Champions League games to come remains to be seen.
The tie against Atletico will not be easy as Diego Simeone’s side are amongst the toughest draws we could have received. Man United were drawn against Paris Saint-Germain before the re-draw saw them land Atletico. Clearly, we lacked any sort of luck that night.
It does, however, hand Rangnick and co an opportunity to showcase that the club can compete with the best teams in the land. The Red Devils have a decent record against the French giants and will hopefully come out on top once again.
While a return to the knockout stages of Europe’s top competition is a welcome occasion for fans, we hope none of them takes advantage of it to run onto the field or cause any other transgression. While it may ultimately prove harmless, such actions do little to improve our image to a watching audience.

The upcoming clashes give Ralf Rangnick a real opportunity to leave his mark at the club. The German is only in charge on an interim basis but there is no reason for him to not lead us to glory. Whether fans will have more reasons to celebrate come the end of the season remains to be seen.
