Marcus Rashford among Manchester United players unhappy with Jesse Lingard treatment over Newcastle interest
According to The Mirror, the Manchester United squad is very unhappy with the club’s treatment of Jesse Lingard over Newcastle United’s failed attempt to sign him this month. The move to St. James’ Park had recently broken down following the demands made by Man United.
Newcastle were interested in taking Lingard away on loan for the rest of the season to help in their battle to survive relegation. They were ready to pay his entire salary package of £100,000-a-week while giving £2.5million in loan fees to the Red Devils. However, the Manchester club asked for a survival bonus worth £12million which led to the deal collapsing in the end.
Ralf Rangnick’s side was adamant that their demands were reasonable since the Magpies would earn around £100million if they stayed in the Premier League at the end of this season. The players did not take kindly as the Magpies were priced out of a move for the Englishman who has not been a regular at Old Trafford.
Marcus Rashford was specifically named as one of the players, and this was the last thing the club needed at this stage in the current campaign. Moreover, a source who has close affiliation with the 29-year-old stated that the Glazers were “petrified” to see him excel elsewhere after what had happened at West Ham United last term.
Fair reaction
We cannot blame the players for their reaction, as the club has effectively forced the attacking midfielder to rot on the bench for five more months. The relegation clause was a rather brave addition, and the demand certainly did not go down well within the camp.
The England international is in line to become a free agent at the end of the season and we should have tried to cut costs with him. Instead, we may now be forced to incur the wages while losing a decent loan sum in the process. The club’s stance has effectively created an environment where the possibility of unrest has increased.
The board should try to rectify their mistake. However, if that chapter with the Toons is closed, they would be wise to entertain interest from Leicester City, Aston Villa and Everton to the fullest and reach an agreement before the deadline date passes.
He is clearly not in Rangnick’s plans and has been barely used this season. With the FIFA World Cup on the horizon, Lingard would surely know that getting playing time is perhaps the only way to convince Gareth Southgate to look in his direction.

Fans would appreciate it if the club does not completely ignore Lingard’s best interests in pursuit of their own benefits. A youth academy graduate at United, the Englishman has given it his all for the badge over the years.
