Transfer News: Real Madrid could use Luka Jovic to pip Manchester United to Erling Haaland
According to the Spanish news outlet OK Diario (h/t The Express), Real Madrid are open to using Luka Jovic as a makeweight to pip Manchester United to the transfer of Erling Haaland. The latter is set to leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the current campaign, which could potentially lead to a tightly contested war between Europe’s top sides for his services.
Manchester City, Chelsea and Bayern Munich have also been keeping tabs on the 21-year-old ahead of the 2022 summer transfer window. Real could hold an advantage over others due to Dortmund’s interest in Luka Jovic, who has not been preferred by Carlo Ancelotti this season.
Haaland’s release clause of £65million will be activated this summer, which has made him a slightly expensive yet affordable potential world-beater. The Madrid club also has a good relationship with BVB which further boosts their chances of getting the star-man. Man City are stated to be their main rivals, which could lead to a very interesting summer saga.
Losing battle?
As things stand, Ancelotti’s side are simply in a better position than us, which alone puts them ahead of us in the race for Haaland. While we are in fourth place in the Premier League at this moment, we cannot guarantee a Champions League qualification for next season just yet.
If we are to stand any chance of signing the Norwegian, we need to qualify for the UCL for obvious reasons. And even if we do so, our current position would put us at a disadvantage as we need a rebuild to return to our glory days. Now, this latest update would further put us in a precarious situation in our efforts of bringing in a prolific scorer.
While the release clause does eliminate the need for discussing with the Bundesliga side, we do need to pay the entire fee upfront. That could be difficult since most transfer fees are paid in instalments these days. However, their interest in Jovic could give the La Liga club a boost in that regard as there is the possibility of a move for the same amount through a part exchange deal instead.

The Glazers will have a challenging task at hand next summer if they hope to get their hands on one of the generational talents. Convincing the Norwegian international and paying his release clause would be our best bet, considering the circumstances.
That means we need to have a good blend of a sporting project and financial leeway to get him in the bag. Only time will give us an answer on how this situation would pan out at the end of the season.
