Fans react as Premier League postpones game between Manchester United and Brentford amidst Covid-19 worry

According to the club’s official website, Manchester United will not be playing in midweek against Brentford after the Premier League decided to postpone their game following a number of positive Covid-19 tests.

The Red Devils were set to play the Bees on Tuesday night to continue their fine run under Ralf Rangnick. However, after some players and staff tested positive recently, the Old Trafford outfit requested to rearrange the match.

The situation got so dire that the club closed the training ground for 24 hours to minimize the risk of further infection. The Premier League obliged the request and paid heed to medical advisors before postponing the game.

The right decision?

However, Man United are not the first club to do so this season. Tottenham Hotspur had their games called off against Rennes and Brighton after a Covid-19 outbreak at the North London club. But in all honesty, it is the right decision by the league.

Although the number or identity of the players and staff members that tested positive are unknown, they would have been a risk to their teammates. Moreover, the players that would have travelled to Brentford would have also put others at risk.

But it would be a letdown for Man United fans that would have booked their tickets for the mid-week fixture. Rangnick had the team playing attractive football again, and this outbreak might cause a lapse in the form now, depending on the players that have tested positive.

However, all of that takes a backseat at this time. The focus should be on swift recovery for the players and making sure it is contained before it can spread further.

The Manchester-based club is now in line to host Brighton at Old Trafford on Saturday. There are no guarantees whether that game would be held, although one would hope there is control over this outbreak by then.
