Ralf Rangnick: Good football isn’t enough at Manchester United as winning matters
At a big club like Manchester United, good football is not enough, and winning titles are necessary alongside it, and Ralf Rangnick hopes to bring back the good times to Old Trafford. However, entertaining football and silverware have been scarce over the past few years, and he would hope to rectify it during his time at Old Trafford.
Man United will face Young Boys later today in the Champions League but, they have nothing on the line as the qualification is already secured. With a three-point lead over Villarreal and a better head to head record, United would remain in the top spot regardless of the result.
Speaking in an exclusive chat with club media’s Stewart Gardner (h/t Manchester United official website), Rangnick conveyed how the Red Devils would do their best to win even if they have qualified for the knockouts. He added how entertaining football alone is not enough as results also matter to ensure success.
The German admits that there is less pressure on him and his side to go out and achieve a result on the night. It does give him the opportunity to test out the players at his disposal and maybe also experiment with certain tactics.
While playing good football is great, it matters for little if it does not lead to success. Rangnick appears to be taking the pragmatic approach to management. At the end of the day, success speaks for itself.
“Result-wise, we are not under pressure, but our ethos is to win games, and we want to play in a way that we still dominate the game. In the end, it’s about winning. It’s not about just playing nice football or intensive football.”
“It’s about winning. So again, the players who will play, they will want to win the game, and maybe then, in a way, also make up for the defeat in the first round [of games].”
A step in the right direction
It has been a long time since we have felt ecstatic about the path the club is going through right now. While there have been times when we enjoyed a match, success always eluded us. Our last major title was back in the 2016-17 season. Five barren years have shown how far we have fallen off the top level. It is good to see that the German boss has taken today’s match seriously and would do everything to get the three points.

We have lost to Young Boys in the reverse fixture, and since they can still qualify for the UEFA Europa League, they would try their best to repeat the result. At the very least, Tangnick will have a determined rival to test his tactics against.
This match would also provide the 63-year-old to analyse the other members of the squad, who have not got minutes and form an opinion. The out of favoured players would also get a clean slate, and they should try their best to make a good impression.
