Transfer News: Manchester United face more competition for Borussia Monchengladbach star Denis Zakaria
According to 90min (h/t ESPN), Manchester United will face competition in the pursuit of Borussia Monchengladbach superstar Denis Zakaria. He has attracted interest from several European clubs over the past few weeks.
Zakaria will see his current contract expire at the end of the 2021-22 season, prompting clubs to turn their attention towards him. Despite that, he has been crucial for his team in a season where they struggled to replicate the success from previous years.
The defensive midfielder has played 13 matches this season and has scored two goals with an assist to boot. The Swiss international helped Monchengladbach to three clean sheets when he has featured, despite the general inconsistency in their performances. Man United have shortlisted him as a target to strengthen their midfield, which has failed to provide balance to the team this season.
Premier League rivals Everton and Leicester City and the new entrants in the transfer race, causing it to spice things up even more. Other clubs including, Arsenal, West Ham United, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain, are also keeping tabs on the Swiss international.
A necessary signing?
We cannot say for sure, as Ralf Rangnick is still in the process of assessing the squad before potentially deciding on his targets. He has managed just one game since he took the managerial role on an interim basis and would need more time to get an unbiased perspective. Moreover, Fred and Scott McTominay have looked good in the new system surprising many.
That being said, Nemanja Matic is in the latter stages of his career, and we do not have the right replacement for the Serbian in the current squad. While there are other midfielders in the squad, but they have different characteristics to our defensive trio and would not suit the role.

An injury or suspension could thin our options quickly, and we would need sufficient backups to compete on multiple fronts. Whether the Gladbach star would be our man remains to be seen, but with the winter transfer window on the horizon, we would get more information surrounding our interest.
