Speaking after the game in an interview (h/t Sky Sports), interim Manchester United manager Michael Carrick wasn’t pleased with his side squandering their lead against Chelsea in a 1-1 draw.

The Red Devils travelled to Stamford Bridge to take on an in-form Chelsea side that was top of the tree coming into gameweek 14. Thomas Tuchel’s men have been imperious in defence, keeping one clean sheet after another, while their attack keeps plundering goals.

Hence, it wasn’t the most audacious thing to suggest that a draw away from home against the defending UEFA Champions League winners and current PL leaders would be a decent result. That is exactly what United got on the day.

But the manner in which it came was not really pleasing. Despite being on the back foot for most of the first half, United created a chance for themselves as some impressive pressing and awareness from Jadon Sancho upfront saw us take the lead in the 50th minute.

However, it was always expected that Chelsea would commit men forward once they were trailing at home. And the pressure paid off when an Aaron Wan-Bissaka tackle saw the Red Devils concede a penalty some 20 minutes from time.

A good result away from home?

The game stayed that way until the final whistle, and considering that United scored first in a scoring draw, it was always bound to make fans think that the club let a lead slip rather than them battling bravely to get a draw in one of the most feared stadiums in England at the moment.

As for Carrick, he was disappointed. The interim manager claims United came at the Bridge to win the game and while he was proud of the players’ efforts, it wasn’t the result he had hoped for, especially after Sancho fired them in front.

“Im disappointed actually. When you are in front in a game like this to have it taken away is disappointing. I’m proud of the players and the group all week. In a difficult situation we tried to make the best of it. But there is that little bitter feeling. We came to win the game. A little disappointed, I can’t lie.”

Carrick, who was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s right-hand man during his time at Old Trafford, made the bold call of benching Cristiano Ronaldo for this game. It wasn’t the worst call in the world as United’s front line seemed to be really proactive off the ball and were putting the pressure on Chelsea’s backline.

It is impractical to think that United would come to Chelsea’s den and put them to the sword, especially with regards to where both the clubs stand right now. And keeping that in mind, Carrick did a decent job.
