Barcelona in contact with manchester United star Edinson Cavani
According to Fichajes (h/t Sport Witness), Barcelona have contacted Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani and are in talks to negotiate for a future transfer. The former is in dire need of attackers following injury plagues and other concerns to their forward line.
Cavani has always been at the peak of his fitness level and was rarely injured throughout his career. However, he has had an injury-plagued campaign this season and is currently out on the sidelines. Expectations were for him to return this weekend, but he would have to take a few more days to regain the desired fitness.
Following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, he had to play second fiddle hence struggling to get game time when he was fit. As a result of all this, he has played in eight matches and has scored just one goal. Barca have decided to take advantage and have eyed him as an option to bolster their attack.
The Catalans offered the Uruguay international €1million for this season with the option to extend the contract for a year. Since the Uruguayan will become a free agent at the end of this term, he would be a cheap option to add to their squad. However, the Red Devils hold all the cards regarding a move and could ask for a higher fee to cool off the interest from the Spanish club.
Basel’s Arthur Cabral is an alternative for the La Liga club but, a potential transfer would be more expensive than the United forward. And, for cash strapped Barca saving as much money as possible is a must, which could determine who among the two would they chase in the transfer window.
Cavani’s future?
It would not be the right decision to let the striker leave during a season, and with the arrival of Ralf Rangnick, he could have a more prominent role within the team. Rangnick is known for his high-intensity pressing style, and the 34-year-old would be perfect for his methods as he is widely known for his high work rate.

Pressing was never a strength for Ronaldo, and the former Paris Saint-Germain striker could offset the former’s lack of effort with his high work rate. There would also be times when tactical tweaks are needed, and Cavani can offer that option. So looking at multiple situations, it would be wise to let him stay till the end of the season.
