Manchester United Champions League trip to Villarreal declared ‘high risk’ for violence
According to a statement from the Interior Ministry of Spain (h/t The Metro), the game between Manchester United and Villarreal in the Champions League has been labelled as one of ‘high risk’ for violence.
The Red Devils are set to travel to Spain for their UCL tie against the Yellow Submarine next Tuesday. United supporters have been allocated 2000 seats out of a possible 23,500. Thus, they shall be expecting their side to win on the night and seal a place in the Round of 16.
However, their game against the men in yellow has been declared as one of ‘high risk’ for violence by the Interior Ministry of Spain. There is no justification mentioned for this alert but travelling fans should take note of this update regardless and observe caution once in Spain.
The statement by the Interior Ministry of Spain read (h/t The Metro):
‘The State Commission against violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport has declared the Champions League match between Villarreal and Manchester United on November 23 as high risk.’
The two clubs have an intense rivalry, with Villarreal defeating us in the Europa League final last season. The Red Devils avenged their loss with a 90th-minute winner by Cristiano Ronaldo in the first leg in September.
