Jurgen Klopp believes Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo should have been given a red card against Liverpool

According to The Metro, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp believes Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo should have received a red card for his challenge on Curtis Jones in the Premier League clash at Old Trafford yesterday.

The Red Devils were given a proper footballing lesson by their arch rivals on home turf.Klopp & co tactically outwitted the Red Devils, effectively securing the win in the first 45 minutes itself. The Anfield outfit were cruising 3-0 before half-time when Ronaldo was then put through on goal by Mason Greenwood.

Alisson Becker saved the shot only for the Portuguese chased down the ball. Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones put himself between the ball and the United striker much to the latter’s chagrin. In a moment of frustration and madness, Ronaldo kicked out, and it did not look pretty.

Regardless, the 36-year-old was handed a yellow card as he kicked out at the ball rather than touching the player. There was a scuffle amongst all the players but it washed out almost immediately. Jurgen Klopp, however, believes the former Juventus man should have been sent off initially.

“I saw it, of course, in the game, and for me, it looked like [a red card]. But I got told that he hits the ball or whatever, or he didn’t hear the whistle, that’s fine.

The German however went on to add that he was not keen to see Ronaldo sent off. He admits to being told later that Ronaldo’s kick was at the ball and not at Jones as initially suspected. In the German’s defence, initial images of the incident did look nasty

“ it looked like [it], but I got convinced, or told at least, that it was not, and that’s fine.”

If the Portuguese international had indeed swiped his feet at Jones, he would have been deservedly sent off. However, in the replay, it could be seen clearly that he was visibly hitting the ball with conviction and never aimed to hit the player.

All in all, the 36-year-old had a poor day at the office and he will now be aiming to be amongst the goals again when the Old Trafford outfit face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
