Manchester United star David de Gea opens up on ‘unacceptable’ defeat to Liverpool

As per the official Twitter account of David de Gea (h/t Manchester Evening News), the Manchester United shot-stopper has termed the abject performance against Liverpool was ‘unacceptable’.

It made for horrendous viewing on Sunday as the Old Trafford outfit suffered yet another defeat and dropped to 7th place in the league table. Several players on the night had an off-day, but one man on the pitch who left with some decorum intact was De Gea.

The Spaniard has been brilliant for the Red Devils at the start of this season as his near-miraculous saves have ensured that United were always amongst the Top 4. However, against Liverpool, there is very little the shot-stopper could have done.

The trio of Naby Keita, Diogo Jota, and Mohamed Salah scored their goals without really any pressure from the United defence. De Gea was left exposed by his defence and had to face the Liverpool attackers either 1v1 or from point blank range.

The 30-year-old goalkeeper sent a message to the fans later on his official Twitter account (h/t Manchester Evening News). It read:

“I feel the pain of our supporters, you give the team everything, and we must do the same. I love this club, and we will not accept this performance.”

There are certainly some United players who will need to perform a deep dive to introspect their performances on the night. De Gea however has little to apologize for. There was little he could have done to deny any of the goals.

Despite the poor performance on the day, herds of the Old Trafford fans were cheering on their team to at least score a goal or two, let alone complete a come-back. However, to the Spanish international’s credit, he also made a couple of important saves to avoid a bigger humiliation.

United’s No 1 has been in some iconic matches with the Reds but the defeat on the weekend would have surely hurt him. He will now be looking to keep a clean sheet when they face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
