Andros Townsend explains why he did Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebration at Old Trafford

Andros Townsend explains why he celebrated like Cristiano Ronaldo after scoring for Everton vs Manchester United

Speaking in a post-match interview to BT Sport (h/t Goal.com) after Everton drew with Manchester United, Andros Townsend explained why he copied Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebration after scoring at Old Trafford.

Man United suffered another disastrous result since the end of the last international break as they succumbed to a 1-1 draw against the Toffees at home. Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani started the game while Ronaldo was left on the bench.

The game against Villarreal had taken a lot out of the players and the squad rotation wasn’t surprising to see. Martial repaid Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s faith by scoring in the 43rd minute.

But it was Andros Townsend’s goal in the 65th minute that proved to be the last goal of the match. Rubbing salt into the wounds of the Man United fans, the winger commemorated the goal with Ronaldo’s iconic ‘Siuu’ celebration.

Townsend explains celebration

Explaining his decision to celebrate in such a manner, Towsend clarified after the game that it wasn’t meant as disrespect and was more of a tribute to an ‘idol’ of his.

“Not imitating, it’s just a mark of respect to a guy who influenced my career. I spent many hours on the training pitch and in the video room trying to analyse his free-kicks and his stepovers and the way he dedicated himself to football.”

Townsend even joked that he probably didn’t do justice to the celebration. In all honesty, the 30-year-old Everton winger did botch the jump a bit.

“So it wasn’t an imitation, it was a mark of respect to one of my idols. I probably didn’t do the celebration justice and didn’t execute it properly.”
