Transfer News: Sir Alex Ferguson recommends Ronnie Edwards to Manchester United

According to Daily Express (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United have been recommended by Sir Alex Ferguson to sign Ronnie Edwards.

The Man United great was apparently impressed by the 18-year-old defender when watching his son Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough United. And now, the youngster has been brought to John Murtough’s notice.

Sir Alex is one of football’s greatest ever managers and his influence on the club continues even 8 years after he called it a day. It was the Scotsman who signed Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United in 2003 from Sporting CP.

The Portuguese went on to be given many nicknames during his stint at Old Trafford, of which one was ‘Ronnie’. The 36-year-old returned to the Theatre of Dreams this summer 12 years after he was sold by Sir Alex to Real Madrid.

Ronnie to MUFC?

And the fans could well see two Ronnies on the field for United if Edwards goes on to join the club. It is still early days in this transfer story, however, and it’s not like the Red Devils are in dire need of a defender.

Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire are both in the prime of their careers and Victor Lindelof, at 27, still has plenty of years in front of him. But it’s never bad to plan in advance.

There isn’t really a young centre-back making headlines at the club, and Ronnie Edwards could well be one for the future. The report adds that Ferguson could use his contacts at Peterborough to help United edge out clubs such as Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur, both of whom are said to be keen to sign the defender.

It remains to be seen if the club turns the recommendation into interest and then a formal offer. Until then, this is one deal that the fans can put on the backburner.
