David de Gea gives honest opinion on Bruno Fernandes’ penalty miss vs Aston Villa
Speaking to MUTV after Manchester United lost to Aston Villa, David de Gea refused to place any blame on Bruno Fernandes for his costly penalty miss.
The Red Devils were wasteful all game and paid for their poor showing in attack when Kortney Hause headed in the Villains’ opener in the 88th minute. United were handed a lifeline when Hause was deemed to have handled the ball inside the box.
With Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo both on the pitch, fans would have been right to think that either one of them could have taken it. The Portuguese duo is impressive from 12 yards out but as it turned out, it was Fernandes who stood over the spot-kick.
Unfortunately, the penalty was skied over the bar much to the pleasure of the travelling Villa fans and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. Once he missed, it was obvious that people would start wondering what would have wondered had Ronaldo taken the spot-kick.
No blame on Bruno
But as for United’s number 1 choice between the sticks, it’s a normal part of the sport and shouldn’t hinder Fernandes’ confidence in the games that follow.
“He’s very confident, he took the ball, so we believe a lot in him. It’s just a penalty. It’s a bad kick and that happens. It’s a normal thing, this is football. He’s going to be the same, a top player, so it’s totally fine.”
United’s unbeaten start to this Premier League season is now over and there is nothing the Red Devils can do about it but react in their next fixture.
