Transfer News: Manchester United ready to sell Anthony Martial
According to Eurosport (h/t Express), Manchester United are ready to sell Anthony Martial. The Frenchman is coming off the back of a forgettable 2020/21 campaign.
Not only was his season cut short due to injury but he also ended up missing France’s trip to the Euros. It was a rather anticlimatic end for a player who promised much in 2019/20. Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho’s arrivals now cast a further cloud on Martial’s opportunities in this campaign.
Martial is no more an indispensable player and could be sold as early as in the January transfer window if his £40million valuation is met.
At 25, the Frenchman is still to enter his prime and could be a serious player in the right system. With his future at United uncertain, his entourage might as well be looking at potential destinations.
According to the report, a move to Arsenal could be a win-win for both parties. Not only has the striker spoken of his admiration for the Gunners but Mikel Arteta’s side is also in need of an ace goalscorer.
The Gunners are currently in limbo and are aiming to rebuild. In Martial, they could potentially land themselves a player who will be integral to their system. It remains to be seen if United will sell to a direct rival.
The Frenchman’s contract expires in the summer of 2024. It gives United enough leeway when it comes to negotiations and there is no imminent threat of him leaving on a free.
Much was expected of Martial when he joined United from AS Monaco in 2015. Despite a hot streak in his first few games, he failed to keep his run going and has proven himself to be rather inconsistent.

United, in their defence, have been patient with Martial and even given him chances aplenty. He looked to have turned a corner in 2019/20 where he was the club’s top scorer and also won the Players’ Player of the Year award.
Unfortunately, his form dropped off a cliff since and he has looked like a shadow of the player he can be. It might finally be time to call curtains on the Martial project and move on.
