Atletico Madrid rejected the chance to sign Manchester United Cristiano Ronaldo earlier this summer
According to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser (h/t The Sun), Atletico Madrid passed up the opportunity of signing Manchester United ace Cristiano Ronaldo earlier this summer after he was offered to the La Liga champions by Jorge Mendes.
By the end of the transfer window, there was a lot of interest developing for the Portuguese star but there was a whole of uncertainty regarding where the 36-year-old will land up by the end of August.
One team that were offered his services were La Liga champions Atletico Madrid and while a deal might have been possible, the Spanish club did not want to face the backlash from fans due to a potential deal for the forward.
Ronaldo is a Real Madrid legend and joining their local rivals would not have gone down too well, courtesy of which Atletico passed up on the opportunity, according to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser (h/t The Sun).
However, Atletico was not the only club that the 36-year-old was linked to which would have stirred up a rivalry. The Portuguese was also linked to United’s rivals Manchester City and a move to the Etihad would not have been well-received by the red half of Manchester.
Regardless, the United legend ended up rejoining the Red Devils on deadline day as he sealed a sensational return from Juventus.
