Dimitar Berbatov accuses Manchester United of buying Donny van de Beek just to please fans
According to Betfair (h/t Manchester Evening News), former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov believes that Donny van de Beek hasn’t been given a proper chance to prove himself for the Red Devils.
The Dutchman got his first start of the season in a shock loss against Young Boys in the first match of their Champions League campaign.
The 24-year-old had to be substituted at half-time for Raphael Varane to tactically adapt to going down to 10 men in the first half. This was just his 16th start for Man Utd in all competitions until now.
In conversation with Betfair (h/t Manchester Evening News), Berbatov spoke about his opinion on the young midfielder’s time with the Red Devils.
“This has been the story of his time at the club. If he plays, he’s brought off. If he comes on, he gets ten minutes. He never gets the chance to settle and show what he can do. It’s just not working out for Van de Beek. It’s a pity because United paid big money for him. But this is what happens when you spend money just to satisfy your fans.”
Ever since van de Beek joined the club he has managed only 38 appearances with Manchester United. He has a solitary goal to his name with the Old Trafford outfit during that time and it is evident that he isn’t the first name in Solskjaer’s mind when he picks his starting XI.
The versatile attacking midfielder came to the Red Devils in a £35million move. It is believed that he has impressed the manager in training but may still have to bide his time to get proper playing opportunities.
Berbatov also hinted that Man Utd could try and salvage a respectable amount from the Dutch midfielder:
“I still hope he gets a proper chance but it is going to be very difficult for him and the club may decide to cut their losses if they can.”

The midfielder had a move to Everton blocked in the summer. Donny van de Beek has struggled to make his place in the first team ever since his arrival and perhaps selling him off in the summer could have been a smart move.
