Fans react on Twitter as Manchester United star Jesse Lingard scores two goals for England
Manchester United attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard had an incredible outing for England as they defeated Andorra 4-0 during their World Cup qualifiers yesterday.
This was England’s second World Cup qualifying game during this international break after also having defeated Hungary 4-0 a couple of days ago. However, this was United star Jesse Lingard’s first start for the country since appearing in the warm-up games before the Euros.
Lingard was a part of the provisional 33-man squad of the summer tournament, but the 28-year-old failed to make the cut for the final 26-man squad. Thus, last night must have done a world of good for him. The Englishman scored 2 goals and provided 1 assist at Wembley against Andorra.
The first came after just 17 minutes when Bukayo Saka found himself in a crossing position out on the left-hand side, and the Arsenal man provided a cross which was deflected and fell straight into the path of Lingard, who was right in the centre of the penalty box. The United star finished calmly with his left foot into the bottom corner.
The second goal came in the last 15 minutes of the game and was probably England’s best goal of the game. The 28-year-old was found open on the wing and he simply cut in and sloshed home from the edge of the penalty box. Lingard ended the day by supplying birthday boy Bukayo Saka with a simple header after Trent Alexander-Arnold took a quick corner and found the 28-year-old.
All in all, it was a great day for England as well as Lingard, who will now be aiming to find a place in United’s lineup in the coming weekend. Let us see how some of the fans reacted to the player’s performance yesterday.
