Transfer News: Manchester United making progress in their efforts to sign Ruben Neves
Speaking on the Football Terrace podcast (h/t The Express), Eurosport’s Dean Jones has claimed that Manchester United are far along the line in their efforts to land Wolverhampton Wanderers star Ruben Neves this summer.
The Portuguese international is one of the Molineux outfit’s best players and played a major role in their return to the Premier League. However, his stint at the Molineux appears to be coming to an end and he could be on the move this summer. (h/t Express)
Jones has gone on to claim that United are in the market for a midfielder and Neves appears to be their man. The fact that we are making progress behind the scenes is good news as the new season draws near.
“I know for a fact that they do like Neves, that they’ve been working on it in the background and it’s reasonably far down the line.”
He goes on to add that the Red Devils have already laid the foundations for a future transfer. Whether we will now push on to land him imminently remains to be seen. Premier League rivals Arsenal are also in the fray for the player and could seize the initiative if we buckle down.
“If they do want to progress with it they can, because the foundations have been laid.”
A seasoned midfielder, the 24-year-old Neves is at the right point in his career to take the next step. Unlike Scott McTominay or Fred, Neves is a ball carrier and his impressive distribution will contribute much to our offensive capabilities this season.
Jones goes on to add that the Red Devils could be set for another addition, this time in midfield. This could get more pronounced should Paul Pogba depart the club in the summer. The likes of Eduardo Camavinga and Leon Goretzka have also been mooted as potential additions. Neves’ prior experience in the Premier League could, however, make him a safer bet.
Whether the deal will be speeded up in the coming weeks remains to be seen. United have already signed Jadon Sancho and have agreed a deal for Raphael Varane. Adding Neves into the mix would make it an excellent window in terms of recruitment.

A direct duel between United and Arsenal for Neves could work out in our favour. Unlike the Gunners, we can provide the player with Champions League football and also provide him with a pedestal to continue his development. A move to the Emirates would be a step down at this point in time.
