Manchester United’s wage bill crosses the £300m mark

Manchester United have a yearly wage bill of more than £300 million this season. That will increase though as Raphael Varane’s mammoth £34.2m is yet to be added to that. It is believed that Sancho’s signing put United above that mark.

It’s hard to remember the last time United had such a great transfer window. Tom Heaton was signed to strengthen the goalkeeping department. The long-standing issue of adding a right-winger was solved by the addition of Jadon Sancho. However, another marquee deal was confirmed yesterday when United agreed on a deal in principle for Raphael Varane.

United remain keen on further additions such as Kieran Trippier but before they sanction any more arrivals, they will need to sell. Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard are the probable players to be facing exits but United are still keen on offering a new deal to Pogba.

Sancho’s weekly wage of £350,000 is said to have pushed United’s wage bill over the £300m mark. His new contract means that he is now United’s second-highest earner only behind David De Gea. Pogba, Cavani, Martial and Rashford are all below them.

Quality players cost premium fees and wages. That was to be expected when United went about the signings of Sancho and Varane. However, now they must look to lighten the squad a bit given there are too many fringe players at this point.
