Manchester United on alert as Barcelona’s talks with Saul Niguez collapse
According to transfer news from Express, Manchester United are on alert after Barcelona’s talks with Saul Niguez collapsed. Barcelona were looking to bring in the Atletico Madrid midfielder but it would seem that is no longer possible. That, in turn, has put the likes of United, Liverpool and Chelsea on alert.
One of the brightest talents in Spain, Saul has come a long way since his developmental years. Over the last few years, he has established himself as an important cog of Diego Simeone’s machinery at Atletico. However, despite Atleti lifting the La Liga title last season, Saul did not play a very big part in that.
Links to Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool were established due to that. However, Barcelona seemed to have gazumped them with a potential swap deal. The Catalan club were willing to offer Atleti Antoine Griezmann in exchange for Saul, which obviously sweetened the deal.
As it would turn out, any hope Barcelona had of bringing in the midfielder has been quashed. Barca are in no position to meet his wage demands due to their financial problems. That has put other clubs such as Manchester United on alert as Saul’s agent looks for a transfer to the Premier League.

A versatile midfielder, the 26-year-old can be a valuable addition to United, especially if Paul Pogba departs the club. He might not be a like-for-like replacement but he comes rather close. It will be interesting to see if United really go after Saul in this transfer window as they also have targets like Declan Rice lined up.
