Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United unlikely to make a move for Giovanni Di Lorenzo this summer
Speaking on the Here We Go podcast (h/t Sports Review), reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has dismissed reports that Manchester United are interested in Napoli star Giovanni Di Lorenzo.
The defender played a low profile but key role in Italy’s triumph at this summer’s Euros. While some of his teammates may have shone brighter, it would be amiss to suggest that Di Lorenzo did not get the job done with efficiency and minimal fuss.
Di Lorenzo also enjoyed a fruitful season with Napoli despite them finishing outside the top four. He scored three goals and made six assists in 36 Serie A games for the Italian side last season. A consistent performer, he could be ready to take his talents to a bigger stage.
Speaking on the show, Romano reveals that it is unlikely that Lorenzo will be leaving Napoli this summer. In fact, he looks set to extend his contract at the club until 2025. Napoli is a difficult side to negotiate with and Lorenzo penning an extension will make any chance of signing him in the future difficult.
“There is nothing between Manchester United and Di Lorenzo. The agent has confirmed the position. Di Lorenzo wants to stay in Napoli and extend his contract until 2026.”
A right-back who can also play in the middle, Lorenzo would have afforded Ole Gunnar Solskajer different options next season. The Red Devils are in the market for a right-back and are eyeing Kieran Trippier. However with Atletico Madrid playing hardball, United may have to turn their attentions to other alternatives.
Lorenzo has shown himself adept at both ends of the pitch. Securing him would have given us much needed strength in depth. With Jadon Sancho also on his way to United, the Red Devils right flank could become a major source of concern for our opponents next season.

With the player set to pen an extension, United are better off looking elsewhere. Targeting the likes of Max Aarons makes sense given his potential and also will add to our homegrown quota of players. Whether that is a course the club is looking to explore remains to be seen.
