Manchester United star Marcus Rashford accepts Pat Tillman award at the Espys 202
It was a proud moment for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford on Saturday as he accepted the Pat Tillman Award for Service at The ESPYS 2021 (h/t ESPN).
Rashford raised millions of dollars for underprivileged kids through his reach and popularity during the Covid-19 lockdown. He wrote an open letter to the England Government last year in order to make them reconsider their stance on terminating the national voucher plan that was started to feed kids from low-income families.
A short time later, instead of pulling the plug on the program, the government announced that it would extend the initiative with an additional £120million in funding, as per ESPN.
The 23-year-old then raised £400million from donors to continue that scheme into 2021, positively affecting the lives of up to 1.7 million children. Such extraordinary measures to make the world a better place deserve all the recognition and praise it can get.
Rashford recognized for his service to the community
Because of Rashford’s preparations for the UEFA Euro 2020 final against Italy, the striker could not travel to New York City, where the ceremony was held. However, he did give a speech in a 6-minute long video that aired during the show.
Speaking in the video, Rashford mentioned that his community during his childhood was small and close-knit, and gave him everything that he needed to do the things he has achieved today off the field.
“My community was very small, so we managed to just come together and work together as well. They gave me everything that I needed to know; ‘Always be kind to people. Help people if you can help people, and in return, people will help you when you need help’.”
