Manchester United readying a new contract for Luke Shaw
According to reliable journalist Fabrizo Romano (h/t The Daily Mail), Manchester United are readying a new contract offer for Luke Shaw in the coming months.
The 25-year-old was one of the club’s top performers last season. He not only put up his best numbers in a United jersey but was consistently a top performer throughout the season.
Shaw appears to have taken that form into this summer’s Euros with England. He has already made three assists in four games as the Three Lions look to win their first major honour since the 1966 World Cup. Gareth Southgate’s side will next take on Denmark in the semifinals.
According to the report, United view the English international as a key part of their plans and are seeking to reward him for his upturn in form. Shaw featured 47 times for United last season in all competitions providing six assists and scoring once. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Shaw is not the only one who could be in line for a new deal. Bruno Fernandes could be set for a lucrative new payday, while Paul Pogba could potentially overtake David de Gea as the club’s top earner.
United will however do well to take their time than rush into offering Shaw a new contract. While the player has undoubtedly impressed, he still has two years to go on his current deal with an option for a further third. There is enough time for us to make a decision.
Shaw’s £150,000 per week wage makes him the ninth-highest earner at United. Interestingly, he is already the second-best paid left-back in the league. It is fair to say that he is suitable compensated as things stand. With the likes of Sancho and potentially Fernandes and Pogba set to increase our wage bill, it would be prudent for us to wait before making a decision on Shaw.

Both Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson, who have arguably had their worst season in Liverpool shirts, have put up better numbers than Shaw last season. United will do well to ensure that Shaw’s performances are more than a purple patch before offering him new terms. After all, there is enough time on his deal for us to make an informed decision.
