AS Roma are linked with a move for Manchester United star Edinson Cavani
According to Youtuber Damiano Coccia ‘Er Faina’ via Calcio Mercato TV (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has arrived at an agreement with Italian giants AS Roma.
The veteran striker is currently impressing with Uruguay at the Copa America. He scored twice for the South Americans in the last two games and is now set to play Colombia in the quarter-finals.
Cavani initially joined United last summer on a one-year deal. He went on to impress and scored 17 goals and six assists in all competitions. This saw him get rewarded with a new deal that lasts until next summer.
According to the report, the player appears to have reached an agreement with Roma regarding a transfer. Tiago Pinto, the Roma General Manager is keeping a keen eye on Cavani. Despite the agreement, the Italians are not ready to pay United compensation. This could very well work in our favour.
“Tiago Pinto is strongly probing Cavani, in principle there’s a basic agreement between the club and the player. The problem is that Cavani isn’t expiring and it will be necessary to give United compensation.”
Cavani joining Roma is however dependent on the future of Edin Dzeko. The Bosnian is keen to leave but does not appear to have any takers. While he was linked with Juventus, a move to the Allianz Stadium looks unlikely.
“If Dzeko goes away, Cavani arrives.”
Makes little sense!
What exactly is the nature of the agreement between Cavani and Roma is unclear. The Uruguayan is happy at United and has no reason to move to Italy at this point in his career. Moreover, he has already laid bare his plans to return to South America in the future.
At 34, he is nearing the end of his career. It makes little sense for him to move to Italy, where he had already made a name for himself with Parma and Napoli. Unless there is something more concrete, United fans will be better of taking the news with a pinch of salt.

United are focused on landing Jadon Sancho who looks set to be our marquee signing this summer. With a new striker nowhere in the picture, it makes little sense for United to even part with Cavani. Add to it the uncertainty surrounding Anthony Martial and the Uruguayan will have a bigger role to play next season. (h/t The Mirror)
