Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire in contention to feature for England against the Czech Republic
According to Sky Sports, Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire is in contention to feature for England in their final Euro 2020 group game against the Czech Republic later tonight.
The Three Lions have garnered four points from their first two games and have already qualified for the knockouts. A positive result tonight will see them top the group.
With progress in the competition assured, tonight’s match gives Gareth Southgate an opportunity to hand Maguire some much-needed match practise. The 28-year-old last played for United in May, more than a month ago.
According to The Guardian, the Red Devils skipper had previously targeted the final group game against the Czech Republic for his comeback. That could very well happen tonight. His return gives Southgate more hope as he plots to go all the way in the tournament.
Having returned to training with the England squad last Thursday, Maguire has pushed on quicker than expected. While there may be certain rustiness expected, garnering minutes under his belt will hold him in good stead heading into the next round.
The bigger picture
With Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson also primed to return, Southgate will be welcoming back his leaders in defence and midfield. A win tonight will guarantee top spot for England in Group D. This will see them face the runner-up of Group F in the next round.
With the likes of France, Germany and Portugal all in contention to face them, there is little to be gained for Southgate to target the top spot, apart from bragging rights. It makes more sense for the Three Lions to ensure their injured stars get match practise while avoiding any major injuries against the Czechs Republic.

Whether Maguire is ready to take the field from the start is debatable. It would stand to reason that he is brought off the bench in the second half. His return will a massive boost to an English side chasing their first major honour since the 1966 World Cup.
