Manchester United star Luke Shaw admits he was worried about missing out on the Euros due to his wrist injury
Speaking on TalkSport (h/t Manutd.com), Manchester United star Luke Shaw has opened up on the wrist injury that almost saw him miss out on this summer’s Euros.
The 25-year-old went into the summer on the back of his best-ever season for United. Shaw even made it to the PFA Team of the Year, beating the likes of Andrew Robertson and Ben Chilwell.
England’s opener against Croatia saw Shaw start on the bench even though Chilwell was completely left out of the matchday squad. Interestingly, Kieran Trippier, a right-back, started at left-back instead. It was later revealed that Shaw was recovering from a wrist injury.
Shaw has now revealed that the injury was sustained in the Europa League final against Villarreal. It almost derailed his dream of making the tournament with England.
“I thought, maybe if it is the bad one, then maybe I might have to have an operation or something.”
The United ace worried after the initial assessments as his doctors refused to give much away. Thankfully, his scan results came out well and the injury was not as bad as feared.
“He didn’t say anything and I was a little bit panicky. But then obviously, the next morning, I’ve got the results and it wasn’t as bad as they thought, so I was fine.”
More opportunities
Shaw admits he was disappointed to miss out against Croatia. However, there is little he can do and will be keen to impress Gareth Southgate in training.
“I was obviously disappointed, but Gareth has 11 players he needs to pick and all I can do is train well, train hard and see what Gareth does in the next game.”
England play their second game this Friday against old enemies Scotland. The Three Lions could drive a dagger into their rivals’ hopes of qualification by inflicting a second straight defeat on them.

Shaw could come up against United teammate Scott McTominay against Scotland this Friday. But two players who will not be involved are Harry Maguire and Dean Henderson. The former is still recovering from his injury while the latter was forced to withdraw from the squad altogether.
