Manchester United enter the race for Ipswich youngster Liam Gibbs

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Manchester United are interested in securing Ipswich Town academy youngster Liam Gibbs this summer.

The 18-year-old is out of contract in the summer and has attracted attention from a number of teams including Norwich City. Gibbs made his first team debut for the Blues in 2019 against Colchester United in the EFL Trophy.

While he is yet to leave a mark on the senior side, Gibbs played a key role for Ipswich Under-18 side en route to the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup where they lost to Liverpool.

Gibbs is out of contract this summer

Gibbs joined the Ipswich Town academy in 2011, progressing through the club’s youth system. He captained their youth sides at under-15 and under-16 levels before a scholarship in 2018.

Gibbs is highly regarded at Portman Road and has also been offered a new deal. Whether he will sign it or not remains to be seen. The youngster penned his first professional contract in 2019.

Capable of playing a dual role in central midfield, Gibbs has the potential to be a top class player in the years to come. He has so far made four appearances for the Ipswich senior side, making one assist.

Is Gibbs the newest young talent to join United?

With Brexit rules limiting English clubs from signing overseas talent under the age of 18, United are now looking in the local market for promising players. Another player on our radar is Grimsby Town starlet Ben Grist.

Should Gibbs opt against signing a contract and depart, Ipswich is entitled to a compensation fee. Whether he will eventually end up at Old Trafford remains to be seen.
