Manchester United star Harry Maguire pleased with England’s win over Croatia
Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire is yet not fit to take the field for England. The 28-year-old however watched on as the Three Lions began their Euro 2020 campaign with a win.
Taking on familiar foes Croatia, England were without Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho while Jack Grealish only started on the bench. Interestingly, none of United’s four players made the cut either, with three of them on the bench.
Marcus Rashford was the lone Red Devils ace who came on in the second half. He briefly wore the armband when Raheem Sterling was taken off late on. That was perhaps the high point for the United contingent on the night.
In the end, Gareth Southgate’s side prevailed, thanks to a second-half strike from Raheem Sterling. He put the ball past the Croatian goalkeeper after some fine work by Kalvin Phillips.
In the end, the goal was enough as England made a winning start to their campaign. Maguire was especially happy and took to Instagram to express his joy. He posted a picture of the players celebrating Sterling’s goal with the message ‘The perfect start’.
Still recovering from his injury, Maguire is unlikely to feature in the group stages. England next takes on Scotland on the 18th before facing the Czech Republic on the 22nd. Proceeding to the knockouts could give Maguire a chance of making an appearance in the competition.
Despite taking part in training on Thursday, Maguire showcased restricted movement and failed to last a full session. Maguire now has his eyes set on England’s final Group D game against the Czech Republic.
