According to Sky Sports, England have been given a major boost, with Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire returning to training.

The Red Devils ace has not played since being taken off injured against Aston Villa on May 9th. It saw him miss the end of our season including the Europa League final against Villarreal.

Maguire was included in Gareth Southgate’s squad despite his injury. While the Three Lions’ opener against Croatia this Sunday may come too early, Maguire may feature in the latter stages of the tournament.

The 28-year-old arrived at the England camp last Thursday along with his United team-mates after being given a week off following the Europa League final. He was pictured taking part in the training session held on Thursday morning.

This will come as a major boost for Southgate given his other options in defence. While England do have the likes of John Stones, Tyrone Mings, Conor Coady and Ben White, none of them come close to Maguire’s ability or leadership skills.

Speaking earlier last week, Maguire admitted that he is looking forward to taking part in the competition. By returning to training, he has now taken his first steps to managing just that.

Maguire is England’s top defender and an automatic starter when fit. The very fact that Southgate took him along in the hopes of him getting fit is an indication of that. Time willing, his decision could yet be vindicated.
