Manchester United star Fred named in the Brazil squad for Copa America
According to the club’s official site, Manchester United star Fred has been named in the Brazil squad for this summer’s Copa America.
The 28-year-old has been a regular for the Red Devils under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He made 48 appearances across all competitions scoring one goal and making two assists. He was an extra-time substitute for Untied in the Europa League final, going on to score in the penalty shootout.
This is his third major tournament with the Selecao. Fred was a part of the Brazil squad for the 2015 Copa America and the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He has so far won 11 caps for the South American giants.
Fred played no part in Brazil’s World Cup run in 2018 and will be aiming to do better this time around. He played in both of their World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay earlier this month.
As the host nation and current holders of the competition, Brazil will kick off the proceedings this Sunday against Venezuela. The Selecao’s tally of nine wins in the tournament is bettered only by Argentina and Uruguay.
Hopefully, Brazil will repeat their success from 2019, etching another star in their glorious history. Being part of such a team will definitely help Fred develop ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.
While there was joy for Fred, there was a tragedy for another United star – Alex Telles. The left-back did not get selected and will now have to cheer for his country from the sidelines.
With the World Cup set to be held next season, Telles could play himself into contention with a strong showing in the upcoming campaign with United.
