Manchester United star Donny van de Beek ruled out of the Euros thanks to injury
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United star Donny van de Beek saw his season go from bad to worse as he was forced to drop out of the Netherlands squad for the Euros.
The Dutch midfielder was included in Frank de Boer’s 26-man squad despite enjoying a largely forgettable season with United. The club’s biggest signing of last summer, the 24-year-old made 36 appearances during the season, of which 21 came off the bench. (h/t Transfermarkt)
According to the statement released by the Dutch FA, they will not be bringing in a replacement for Van de Beek. The player last made an international appearance against Gibraltar in March.
The Netherlands begin their campaign against Ukraine on Sunday, June 13 before playing Austria four days later. They round off their group stage with a match against North Macedonia on Monday, June 21. All fixtures take place in the Johan Cryuff Arena in Amsterdam.
The tournament was an opportunity for Van de Beek to showcase just what he was capable of. Despite scoring on his United debut, he has largely played a peripheral role during the 2020/21 campaign.
He is now better off getting himself to full fitness and get himself ready for pre-season. While it remains to be seen if he has a future at Old Trafford, it would be foolish to dismiss him after just a season.
One of the best players in the Eredivisie, his arrival at United was met with much fanfare. While there have been glimpses of his ability, it has been few and far between for us to get excited about.

The 24-year-old was signed in anticipation of Paul Pogba’s departure. However, the Frenchman enjoyed an impressive campaign and could even sign a new deal to stay at Old Trafford.
It was reported earlier this season that Van de Beek was set for showdown talks with Solskjaer regarding his future at the club. Whether his latest setback will bring forward that meeting remains to be seen.
