Manchester United star Donny van de Beek set for showdown talks with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Manchester United star, Donny van de Beek is all set to hold showdown talks with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regarding his future at the club.
The Dutchman was United’s marquee signing from last summer. Despite scoring on his debut, he has largely struggled for opportunities and has been a largely peripheral player.
Van de Beek ended the season as an unused substitute as United fell to Villarreal on penalties in the Europa League final. Overall, he made 36 appearances all season, of which just 15 came from the start. (h/t Transfermarkt)
The 24-year-old was signed in anticipation of Paul Pogba’s departure. However, the Frenchman enjoyed an impressive campaign and could even sign a new deal to stay at Old Trafford.
This puts Van de Beek in a precarious position. While he has made the Netherlands squad for the Euros, he can ill afford another season on the sidelines at Old Trafford.
Solskjaer had informed the player last summer that it would take time for him to be integrated into the United side. While it is understandable, the lack of opportunities afforded to him remains a concern. It would appear that the player is now running out of patience.
Too good to be on the bench!
With the Red Devils keen to bring in a new central midfielder this summer, Van de Beek’s position at the club could be even more perilous. At 24, he should be playing regularly – a thought that appears unlikely at United.
A consistent player at the top level for Ajax Amsterdam, Van de Beek played a key role in their incredible Champions League run in 2019/19. His goals saw the Dutch giants overcome the likes of Real Madri and Juventus as they made it all the way to the semifinals.
