Saul Niguez agrees to join Bayern Munich amidst Manchester United interest

According to Radio Marca (h/t The Daily Mail), Manchester United have once again missed out on Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez.

The 26-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in the past few weeks. He is now closing in on a move to German champions Bayern Munich instead.

The Bundesliga giants have agreed upon a £68million deal that will take the Spanish international to the Allianz Arena. He is seen as a replacement for Thiago Alcantara, who joined Liverpool last summer.

Niguez, a crucial member of Diego Simeone’s side, has seen his standing lowered last season. With his role in the side diminished, he was keen to seek a new challenge elsewhere.

He made 41 appearances in all competitions as they won the La Liga title this season. Of his 33 appearances in La Liga, only 22 have come as starts.

This is not the first time that we have been linked with the player. The Red Devils kept a keen eye on the Spaniard during David Moyes’ time in charge. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. Seven years on, history repeats itself.

Atletico for their part are keen to reinvest the amount they will receive in their squad. They have already earmarked Udinese’s Rodrigo de Paul their main target.

Hopefully, United too show the same initiative in the market in their search for reinforcements. It is no secret that we need strengthening if we are keen to push on and challenge for titles next season.

Whether Niguez was not seen as a top priority by United is debatable. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bring in Jadon Sancho and a central defender before they turn their attentions elsewhere.
