Sergio Ramos to quit Real Madrid amidst interest from Manchester United
According to The Mirror, Manchester United target Sergio Ramos looks set to call time on his stint at Real Madrid.
The 35-year-old’s departure will bring to an end what has been a trophy-laden 16 years at the Santiago Bernabeu. During this time, he made 671 appearances, scoring 101 goals and making 40 assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)
With his contract expiring at the end of the month, an extension does not appear to be anywhere in sight. With his relationship with club president Florentino Perez in tatters, it would appear Ramos’ time in the Spanish capital is nearing its end.
United have been linked with a move for Ramos since last January. It is quite evident that the Red Devils are in need of a central defender and there are few players more accomplished than the Spanish ace.
The likes of both Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City are also in the fray for Ramos’ signature. The latter look set to offer him a two-year deal and could steal a march in his pursuit.
Despite his age, Ramos has a year or two left in him and would add valuable experience to the United backline. As Thiago Silva has shown at Chelsea, age could be no bar if the player can adapt to his surroundings.
In Edinson Cavani, United have seen that there is value in the free-agent market if one chooses to look for it. Ramos too could prove to be a shrewd short-term signing that could shore up our defence.

Whether United make a move for Ramos remains to be seen. While we are keen to bring in the likes of Raphael Varane and Jules Kounde, it remains to be seen if we can fit them within our budget given the other priorities.
Ramos will offer us a short-term solution so that we can strengthen other positions.
