Report: Man United could save £14m in deal for La Liga star if they act swiftly

Manchester United must act quickly to land Pau Torres on the cheap

According to the Express, Manchester United may have to pay the price if they wait too long to make a move for Spanish international Pau Torres this summer.

The Villarreal star is among the defenders on the club’s radar going into the transfer window. It is no secret that United need a reliable centre-back to partner Harry Maguire and Torres has emerged as a solid option.

The Red Devils can land the 24-year-old if they pay the £43m release clause. However, there is a particular constraint in the player’s contract that could prove costly if we don’t act fast.

According to the report, Torres’ release clause rises to £57m for the last fortnight of the summer transfer window. This gives United £14m reasons not to dawdle on the transfer deal.

The Red Devils are quietly confident that they have the upper hand in the race to land Torres. This, in spite of Real Madrid also remaining keen on the player.

The 24-year-old Spanish defender was outstanding against Arsenal in the Europa League semi-finals. He put in a heroic performance as the Yellow Submarines held the Gunners to a goalless draw at the Emirates in the second leg.

The United squad will receive a first-hand account of the Spaniard’s abilities when we take on Villarreal in the Europa League final on 26 May. Going up against the likes of Edinson Cavani, Torres has an opportunity to convince United that he is the man to make us better.

It was reported earlier this month that United are keen to work out a deal for Torres ahead of the summer’s European Championships. Not only would it prove to be a proactive move but also a financially astute one.
