Transfer News: Juventus join Manchester United in the race for Pau Torres
Man United are keen on signing a centre-back this summer. Although they have already closed a deal for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez, they might still want to reinforce the defence and Pau Torres from Villarreal seems to be a really interesting option.
However, the Red Devils will not have it easy especially with Italian powerhouses Juventus also joining Man United in the race for the talented Spanish defender. Pau Torres has been one of the best defenders in La Liga.
A cornerstone of Unai Emery’s project at Villarreal, Pau Torres is crucial to everything that the yellow submarines do. The La Liga club had an exceptional run to the semi-finals of the Champions League and Torres was a crucial element of it.
A mainstay in Luis Enrique’s national team squad, Pau Torres often finds himself rotating with Eric Garcia for the Spanish national team. Having proven his ability with his performances over time, it’s high time he made the next big step in his career.
This season, Pau Torres was exceptional for Unai Emery’s team and was a rock at the back for Villarreal. The 25-year-old centre-back played 46 times for the La Liga club this season scoring six goals and providing one assist across all competitions.
Scoring six goals as a centre-back is no mean feat and it is surprising that Pau Torres has gone so under the radar this season. He would be the perfect signing for Man United in an ideal scenario but the Red Devils might be sceptical now that they are closing to signing Martinez.
Man United need to analyse and figure out if signing Pau Torres is a necessity now that they are closing in on the Ajax man. Both players are left-footed and could come in the way of each other’s progress in the team.
