Manchester United legend Nicky Butt weighs in on anti-Glazer protests
Speaking to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United Legend Nicky Butt has given his opinion on the anti-Glazer protest that is shaking the club to the core.
Anger over United’s participation in the European Super League manifested into large scale opposition of the Glazers ownership of the club. The Americans were never popular amongst the supporters. They now appear to have bitten off more than what they can chew.
A number of protests have been held in recent weeks. However, the most notable of them occurred earlier this month when fans broke into Old Trafford ahead of the Premier League clash against Liverpool.
Butt believes everything must be done in order to ensure United have the best shot at success. While he does understand the fans’ stance, he also believes they went too far by breaking onto the Old Trafford turf.
“I think everyone has a freedom to say what they want and have their thoughts heard, but you can sometimes overstep the mark and it did that the other night.”
The incident painted a poor picture of what was otherwise a largely peaceful gathering. Butt believes that such incidents only lend credence to those who claim to dismiss the agitations.
An unnecessary distraction
Butt’s words echo that of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who also spoke against violence being the answer to our problems. The last thing we want is for the events to affect the players and shift the focus from the larger issues at hand.
United have since enhanced security around both Carrington and Old Trafford. The club is keen to prevent a repeat of the incident and are taking measures.

Butt was on United’s payroll until recently. He joined as a coach in 2012 before serving as interim manager for the United Under-23s. Butt eventually took over as the head of first-team development in 2019. He left the role just last month.
He has gone on to reveal that he has no regrets about his decision and left with his head held high.
