Newcastle United manager was not happy with the reporter asking him why he was smiling with Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Paul Ince: Steve Bruce and Mark Hughes would have outdone Solskjaer at Manchester United

Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t The Daily Star), former Manchester United skipper Paul Ince has made an incredible statement regarding the club’s managerial position.

He believes former United greats Mark Hughes or Steve Bruce would have done a better job at Old Trafford in comparison to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“At the time, when they gave Ole the job, I thought he was really inexperienced for one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Ince appears to have softened his stand on the Norwegian since. Solskjaer may be yet to win a trophy at Old Trafford but has largely stabilized what was a ship with no direction.

“I thought there were better managers out there with more experience, like Steve Bruce or Mark Hughes, who could have come in and done a better job.”

While we understand Ince’s doubts regarding Solskjaer especially with respect to the lack of experience, suggesting Hughes or Bruce would hardly have been better.

Both United legends have a myriad of managerial experience in English football. However, the fact that neither of them has ever won a major trophy paints a story.

Unspectacular yet stable!

Thankfully, the United board chose to go with Solskjaer who has done reasonably well. Winning a trophy this season would certainly be a step in the right direction.

Ince has since mellowed down to the fact that Solskjaer could be the right man for the job. He has even gone on to praise the team’s ability to consistently overturn deficits, and claimed that it was a sign of solidarity within the squad.

“As a manager, you don’t want to keep going behind in games and having to come back but it shows you’ve got the character and mental side to do that.”

In Solskjaer, United do have a level headed manager, at least on the surface. While it is far from certain if he is the chosen one, he has so far brought back stability to a side crying out for it.
