Manchester United legend Roy Keane wants Nicky Butt to accompany him to Celtic
According to The Sun, Manchester United legend Roy Keane has earmarked Nicky Butt to be his No.2 if he takes over as Celtic Manager.
The duo enjoyed much success as teammates under Sir Alex Ferguson and have had differing experiences in management since. Keane managed Sunderland and Ipswich Town before becoming an assistant at Republic of Ireland, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.
Butt is yet to manage at the top level but served as interim manager for the United Under-23s before taking over as the head of first-team development in 2019. He is currently available for a job after leaving the role last week.
Butt stated that he is keen on a new professional challenge and Celtic could provide him with just that. The Hoops are yet to come to terms with being toppled by Steven Gerrard’s Rangers and are keen to retake their spot at the top of Scottish football.
Celtic are yet to make a call on their new manager. It is believed that Butt’s presence could sway the decision in Keane’s favour. Others in the fray include Scotland boss Steve Clarke, Red Bull Salzburg’s Jesse Marsch and ex-Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder. (h/t The Mirror)
Although he hasn’t managed a club since 2011, Keane is a former Celtic player, having enjoyed a brief spell in Scotland before hanging up his boots.
A new challenge!
It has been reported that Butt’s departure hints at a falling out with United’s new Football Director John Murtaugh and Technical Director Darren Fletcher.
The report also goes on to add that Butt would relish the chance to work with Keane at Celtic. He has also been linked with assisting Wayne Rooney at Derby County.

Both Keane and Butt were exceptionally successful players. However, their managerial record isn’t as glamorous. Celtic could very well give them the opportunity to display they have what it takes to succeed at the top level.
Gerrard did just that at the Ibrox. There is no reason why the United boys can’t match that.
