Transfer News: Manchester United lead City in Nikola Milenkovic pursuit
According to Italian news publication La Nazione (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester United are ahead of Manchester City in the transfer race to sign Nikola Milenkovic from Fiorentina.
Milenkovic, 23, has been with the Viola since 2017 and has grown into one of the most promising young centre-backs in Serie A. However, the Serbian international is set to enter the final year of his contract with the club, sparking widespread speculations surrounding his future.
Manchester United have been linked with a transfer for Milenkovic for quite some time. Neighbours Manchester City are also said to be keen on the signing of the Serb.
And the report claims that there is a very good chance of the defender moving to the Premier League this summer. It is further stated that Manchester United are ahead of City in the chase to land the 23-year-old.
Manchester United’s search for a new central defener has been no secret. Despite recent improvements, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have not been entirely consistent while Eric Bailly has been blighted by injury problems all through his United career.
Securing another top-class defender to partner club captain Maguire, could thus, go a long way in helping Manchester United take the next big step under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

It remains to be seen if Milenkovic turns out to be that man, though. The report adds that Fiorentina are looking for a transfer fee in excess of €35m despite him entering the final year of his contract.
With Man City also in the hunt, it will be interesting to see if Manchester United do push ahead to secure the transfer of Milenkovic.
