Nicky Butt leaves Manchester United amid disagreement with John Murtough

According to Daily Mail, Nicky Butt who was in charge of first-team development has left his position at Manchester United. The former player and coach is said to have left the club after differences with new Football Director John Murtough and being ignored for the Technical Director role which was offered to Darren Fletcher.

Butt was an academy player at United and went on to represent us for 12 years from 1992 to 2004. He then joined the academy as a coach for the last nine seasons.

Under his tutelage, several academy stars went on to represent the first-team. He was the main person in charge of overseeing the progress of current first-team stars such as Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Scott McTominay, Dean Henderson and Axel Tuanzebe.

On leaving United after so many years, he gave his statement and spoke about how he was grateful to have represented the club and then played a part in the development of other players. He added that he was proud of the coaching staff who give chances to the youngsters and now wants to move on to another challenge.

“I’m proud of the role everyone on the staff plays in giving our young footballers the best possible chance of fulfilling their potential, and the results are clear to see in the increased number of homegrown players reaching the first team.

“I already know from my playing days how difficult it is to leave Manchester United, but it feels like the right moment for a new professional challenge and I look forward to exploring opportunities that build on the great experiences I’ve had here over the past nine years.”

However, it is believed that the friction caused between Murtough and him plus the role of Football Director given to Fletcher instead of him were reasons for him to move out.

Murtough’s recent appointment meant that he was Butt’s direct superior. There is no doubt that United have lost a key figure in their coaching staff and it remains to be seen who replaces him.
