Player News: Manchester United loanee Jacob Carney excels at Portadown as temporary transfer pays off
It is good news on the loan front for Manchester United goalkeeper Jacob Carney as his transfer to Portadown continues to reap rewards.
The derby defeat last week to Glenavon was Carney’s 11th appearances between the sticks for the Shamrock Park goalkeeper. Although he is yet to keep a clean sheet, his performances have been earning him rave reviews.
According to The Newsletter, Portadown manager Matthew Tipton has revealed that opposition managers are quick to point out that there is a real talented goalkeeper at Shamrock Park.
Tipton is keen to hold onto the youngster for another season. Whether he will get his wish remains to be seen. The player too could do with staying in an environment where he is held in high regard and is trusted.
“I would love him to stay with us again next season and he has really settled in well since moving over to Northern Ireland.”
He admitted that United are keeping track of Carney’s progress and are impressed with what they have seen. Despite not having a shutout, the youngster won the club’s player of the month for February.
“Manchester United are in contact with me after every game and obviously regularly with Jacob directly, so they seem pleased with his progress at Portadown.”
The 19-year-old signed with the club in 2017. Good with the ball in his hands and with his feet, he has the potential to become a modern-day sweeper keeper.
Carney joined Stocksbridge Park Steels in the Northern Premier League Division One South East for the first two months of the 2019/20 season. His current spell at Portadown is clearly doing him a lot of good.
