According to the Sun (h/t Sunderland Echo), Sunderland and Burnley are interested in Manchester United starlet Jacob Carney.

The 20-year-old is currently on loan at Portadown and has garnered interest given his impressive performance between the sticks.

He has so far played 22 times for the Northern Irish club impressing his manager Matthew Tipton to end. He too retains hopes of keeping the youngster for another season.

Unlike at Portadown, Carney will be relegated to the Under-21 side if he chooses to move to Sunderland or Burnley. While one may claim that the standard is not too different, the rigours expected of a first-team player will be missing.

The youngster has been at United since 2017. With the season in Northern Ireland now concluded and his contract at Old Trafford going the same way, he has a decision to make.

Moving to Burnley could give him an opportunity to play at a higher level in comparison to Sunderland. The Potters are a Premier League outfit and there is certainly the chance that he can garner more attention.

Good with the ball in his hands and with his feet, he has the potential to become a modern-day sweeper keeper. Given the riches at our disposal, it is understandable why Carney does not have a place at United.

United are ready to cull their goalkeeping department come the summer. Sergio Romero, Joel Pereira and Paul Woolston are all set to depart the Theatre of Dreams.

David de Gea could also follow, making Dean Henderson the No.1 goalkeeper in the squad. Whether Carney too joins the list of players leaving remains to be seen.
