Manchester City inserted an ‘anti-Manchester United clause’ into Brahim Diaz deal with Real Madrid
According to Spanish publication Marca (h/t Daily Mail), Manchester City inserted an ‘anti-Manchester United’ clause in the deal that took Brahim Diaz to Real Madrid in 2019.
Pep Guardiola was keen to keep the attacker at the Etihad but Diaz wanted more first-team minutes. With his contract coming to an end, City were forced to sell the player than risk losing him for free.
The 21-year-old is currently on a season-long loan at AC Milan. He has so far made 28 appearances for the Italians scoring four times and assisting three more. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Clearly, City rated Diaz so highly that they were intent on making it difficult for United if they chose to make a move. According to the contract, the Sky Blues will pocket 40% of any transfer fee if the player decides to join United.
Diaz’s deal at Madrid runs until 2025. He has so far made 21 appearances for Los Blancos and is yet to cement himself as an important player.
His current spell at San Siro is the best run of first-team football he has enjoyed so far. Diaz played 69 minutes of Milan’s Europa League tie against United at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
It remains to be seen whether Diaz’s stay in Italy is extended for next season. He has so far played his part as Milan lie second in the Serie A, six points adrift arch-rivals Inter Milan.

The clause will see Real surrender a major part of the transfer income to City should they accept an offer from United. This could very well see them refuse to sell to us or demand we play a premium fee when it compares to other sides.
