Manchester United star Nemanja Matic leaves the door open for Benfica return

According to Sport TV via O Jogo (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester United star Nemanja Matic has left the door open for a potential return to former side Benfica.

The 32-year-old spent three years in Portugal where he won the league. He was also part of the Eagles side that made it to the finals of the 2013 Europa League.

“My family likes the city a lot, we miss it a lot.”

While he is not keen to end his career anytime soon, he admits a return to the Estadia da Luz is not outside the equation.

“I haven’t thought about ending my career yet, let’s see. Benfica stayed in my heart and let’s see what brings us to the future.”

Matic admits he is happy at United and does not plan to leave Old Trafford just yet. However if a return to Portugal presents itself, Benfica is the only team for him.

“If Benfica believes it is possible for me to return, then let’s think about it. Now, I’m very happy at Manchester United, I don’t plan to leave yet but you never know what will happen. And if I ever return to Portugal, the only team I want to play for is Benfica.”

The chance to work under Jorge Jesus, a manager pivotal in the player’s career is something that appeals to him. Jesus also managed Bruno Fernandes at Sporting Lisbon.

“He was a very important coach, with whom I grew a lot as a player and as a person.”

At 32, Matic is not a long-term option for United. There will come a time when we will have to replace the midfielder and whether it will invoke a return to Benfica remains to be seen.

Matic has fond memories of his time at Benfica. He also went on to add that his family has great affection for the city.
