Manchester United want Kylian Mbappe or Harry Kane as Erling Haaland alternative
According to The Athletic (h/t Metro), Manchester United have lined up Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane as alternatives for Erling Haaland. While Haaland does remain their primary choice, they are keeping an eye on the other two also as contingency plans.
Both Mbappe and Haaland reaffirmed their position as two of the game’s best upcoming talents with their displays in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 against Barcelona and Sevilla respectively.
Also, the duo has been linked with a move to other clubs in recent times. Then there’s Harry Kane who needs no introduction. The English striker is a home-made product and the club have seen him first-hand as to what he can do.
Despite Solskjaer having a prior association with Haaland at Molde, he failed to get him to Old Trafford last year. However, signing the player now has gotten a lot more complicated. His contract ends in 2024 but he has a release clause of £62m that activates in 2022. That could prompt Dortmund to cash in on him this summer to get a higher transfer fee.
United have a striker problem on their hands. Anthony Martial is too inconsistent to lead the line for Manchester United. On the other spectrum is Edinson Cavani, whose age means that he isn’t the long-term solution for the club.

Hence, bringing one of Mbappe or Kane could be a good idea in case the Haaland plan does not work out. Mbappe is close to the final year of his contract which means United are in with a shout. Kane also remains a viable option in case Spurs fail to win trophies. Whatever be the case, Manchester United need to sign at least one new striker next season.
