Roy Keane blames David de Gea for being too cowardly in 3-3 draw vs Everton
Former Manchester United star Roy Keane has blasted David de Gea for lacking enough courage in the Red Devils’ 3-3 draw against Everton.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were cruising at half-time with a 2-0 lead, thanks to goals from Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes. However, things fell apart quickly after the interval, as the hosts were punished for some lacklustre defending.
Abdoulaye Doucoure brought Everton back into the game, tapping home from close range after De Gea parried Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s strike straight into his path. James Rodriguez then made it all square inside just seven minutes of the second half.
United looked to have secured all three points courtesy of Scott McTominay’s 70th-minute header. But Calvert-Lewin banged in the equaliser in the final minute of stoppage time to ensure both sides shared the spoils on a thrilling night at Old Trafford.
And Keane has come down hard on De Gea for lacking enough authority to come out of his line and prevent Calvert-Lewin’s leveller that saw United drop two crucial points in the title race. The club legend told Sky Sports (h/t Metro):
“Particularly with the position they are in, they’ve got goals in their team but again defensively, particularly the goalkeeper, I’m certainly not his biggest fan, two goals last night, the one thing you want from your goalkeeper is courage and he didn’t show that for the equalising goal. Not a good sign.”
While it was a collective defensive failure in the second half that led to United’s undoing at the weekend, De Gea deserves a fair bit of stick for his indecisiveness between the sticks.
The Spaniard has had his fair share of ups and downs this season and will be expected to pull up his socks in the coming weeks.
